Another classification of shower valves are thermostatic and pressure balancing valves.
1. Thermostatic Valves
This valve type is with a thermostatic system that controls the temperature of the water. It allows you to adjust the temperature of the water to suit your desire.
You can select the water temperature using the dial which is on the valve’s faceplate even before the water flows.
Recently, many of the thermostatic valves feature anti-scald technology. It helps to prevent sudden surges in temperature which might lead to burns. Anti-scald valves allow you to enjoy the shower with a free mind. This is because you’ll not be afraid of a sudden hike in temperature.
Another important feature of the thermostatic valve is water flow control. It helps you to control the volume of water that flows from each of the outlets. Each of the outlets has its separate control system. This allows you to enjoy a better showering experience.
2. Pressure Balancing Valves
The pressure balancing valve is very popular in modern homes. Its function is to control the water pressure from each of the outlets.
It keeps the water in one pipe from venturing into another through a spring gasket which acts as a stopper. This helps you to control the flow. The stoppers are with screws that allow you to work on them.
The pressure balancing valve has a spool that serves as the engine. Thanks to its vibrating piston configuration. The cold and hot water lines produce their own pressure that drives the piston. This will, in turn, controls the output.
Whenever there is a pressure drop in the cold water pipe as a result of a toilet flush or electrical surges. Hot water might escape through the passage without the cold water. Now, the piston will vibrate to limit the hot water flow to maintain constant water temperature.
Moreover, the pressure balancing valve is equipped with a shower cartridge. This cartridge is sharing a connection with the handle. The cartridge allows the cold and hot water to mix at the instance of turning the handle. Then you can adjust the temperature.
The temperature of the water is controlled by a piece of metal that is positioned in the cartridge. It blocks the valve to prevent scalding.
The only disadvantage of this valve in the shower faucet is the absence of a standard temperature detector. This could cause the water to get hot than the set temperature.
Based on the Bathtub & Shower Faucet Configuration
1. Tub/Shower Combo Faucets
The tub shower combo faucet is in many apartments across the globe. It has a wall mounted tub spout and a shower head on the bathtub. They share the same handle and diverter in the form of a lever or button. This lever allows you to control the flow of the water between the tub and the shower.
2. Shower-Only Trim Kits
The shower-only trim kits often feature different valves that control the shower heads. They’re usually equipped with a thermostatic valve to control the temperature flow.
Based on the Number of Handles
1. Single Handle Shower Faucets
This is one of the most popular shower faucet types available on the market. This design allows you to adjust the temperature and water flow with ease.
2. Double-Handle Shower Faucets
The double handle shower faucet is less classy but more traditional. Many of the double handle shower faucets are equipped with diverters that serve as the third handle for the shower.
