The human body needs water to survive. A person may last as long as 21 days without food, but only up to 3 days without water. Our bodies need constant hydration. Not just water, but clean drinking water. Almost all water from whatever source contains microorganisms, some of which are relatively harmless, but others may contain viruses and diseases. That’s why you need to purify water and the benefits of purified water have gained such importance.
Why Is Water Purification So Important?
Bacteria can be found in almost anything, but microbial contaminants especially abound in and around water. Cholera, dysentery and typhoid are just some the many diseases that can be found in dirty drinking water and the consequences of contracting any one of them can be fatal. That is the importance of water purification.
Dirty pipes can be responsible for harbouring and incubating many harmful pathogens. Although we don’t like to think about it, it is a fact. Tubing is buried and underground, which makes it difficult to clean and treat any microorganisms that collect within them. Most household tubing is embedded within the walls and so are equally hard, if not impossible to clean. Of course, every effort is made to ensure that your drinking water is safe before it is delivered to you through the pipes that connect you to the water system, but it isn’t always failsafe. Plumbing contaminants aren’t easy to purge. The benefits of water purification are that it is done outside of that system and gives you peace of mind.
Chlorine is used by many water authorities to destroy any harmful contaminants within the water supply before it reaches you. If you are unsure about the purity of your water you can also use chlorine yourself at the point of delivery, your tap. A few drops or tablets dissolved in a container of water and in 30 minutes you can be assured that you have clean water to drink.
To have a healthy and well-functioning body it has to be supplied with minerals and vitamins. Such minerals are Potassium, Phosphorus, Calcium, Sodium, Magnesium, and Iron are but a few. There is a whole list that the body needs to perform at an optimum level and some are considered as trace elements, but all play a vital part.
Taste and Smell
Some water comes with an unpleasant taste or smell. Although clean and free of contaminants, it isn’t nice to drink. Sometimes that is because it is what is called hard water and sometimes because chemical purification methods still leave a smell and aftertaste. This can be combated easily with harmless solutions added to your water that gets rid of both. Many chemical treatments that use drops or tablets now have added ingredients that will solve this problem at the same time as they purify the water. Or using a water ionizer can significantly change the bland taste.
The best solution is to drink purified water that has no pollutants or contaminants, that is completely free of microbes, chemical substances or bacteria. Either buy previously purified bottled water or purify your own at home, using a water filter. You can also get purified water instantly by using quality faucet water filters. This is achieved through either filtration or purification methods using chemical treatments or for example: RO water filtration systems.

Can Purified Water Harm You?
By definition, pure water is sterile because it doesn’t contain any contaminants, but it also doesn’t contain any of the vital minerals that the body needs. Drinking only pure water can lead to water intoxication. If you are worried about the quality of the water that you are drinking, then invest in a home purification system.
